Our Roots

Hemingford was first settled in 1885 by Canadian immigrants and officially platted a year later by the Lincoln Land Company, who named the town after the settlers’ former home in Hemmingsford, Canada. Early on, Hemingford played a central role in county affairs, briefly serving as the Box Butte County seat before it was relocated to Alliance in 1899.

In the early 20th century, Hemingford earned the title “Potato Capital of the World,” shipping nearly 2,000 carloads of potatoes in 1930. Known for its strong agricultural roots, Hemingford remains a vital part of Nebraska’s northern Panhandle today, proud of its heritage and the people who have shaped it.
